Ruby Rewind se desarrolló a partir de mi crianza. Crecí en casa de mi abuela con mi hermano y mi tío, y era un hogar donde las cosas se acumulaban con el tiempo. Mi tío solía ir de compras a tiendas de segunda mano y traía a casa lo que le llamaba la atención, y mi abuela tenía sus propias colecciones —Fiesta Ware, vidrio de colores y otras piezas que le encantaban— y rara vez se deshacía de nada. Con el paso de las décadas, la casa se llenó de ropa, juguetes, cristalería, porcelana, libros, juegos de mesa, antigüedades: capas de la vida cotidiana y la historia, y pasé mucho tiempo revisándolo todo.
De niña, el dinero escaseaba, así que la ropa usada y los viajes ocasionales a tiendas de segunda mano por Chicago y el South Side eran parte de mi vida. A medida que crecí, eso se quedó conmigo. Compré mi propia ropa de segunda mano en el instituto, busqué en ventas de bienes raíces de adulta para ayudar a pagar mi boda y, más tarde, amueblé la mayor parte de nuestra primera casa de segunda mano. Era práctico, pero también intencional, ya que las cosas del pasado a menudo se mejoran y cobran más significado.
Ruby Rewind se trata de fijarse en esas piezas. Las que llaman la atención, que parecen bien hechas o que te traen algo familiar. Me inspiro en mi pasado familiar, películas de época y fotografías antiguas, y elijo artículos que reflejen esa sensación de historia y carácter. Busco piezas de diferentes épocas y estilos y las comparto con alguien nuevo que las apreciará igual de bien.
Rubí me pareció el nombre perfecto porque cada pieza es una joya a su manera, hecha para reencontrarse, no para olvidarse. El rojo siempre ha formado parte de mi historia, desde mi cabello hasta mi anillo de compromiso y el nombre de mi hija.
Ruby Rewind grew out of the way I was raised. I grew up in my grandmother’s house with my brother and uncle, and it was a home where things accumulated over time. My uncle would thrift often and bring home whatever caught his eye, and my grandmother had collections of her own—Fiesta Ware, colored glass, and other pieces she loved—and rarely let anything go. Over the decades, the house filled with clothes, toys, glassware, china, books, board games, antiques—layers of everyday life and history and I spent a lot of time going through it all.
Money was tight growing up, so hand-me-downs and occasional thrift trips around Chicago and the South Side were part of life. As I got older, that stayed with me. I thrifted my own clothes in high school, hunted estate sales as an adult to help pay for my wedding, and later furnished most of our first home secondhand. It was practical, but it was also intentional as things from the past are often made better, and they feel more meaningful.
Ruby Rewind is about noticing those pieces. The ones that catch your eye, feel well-made, or bring something familiar with them. I’m inspired by family ancestry, period films, and old photography, and I choose items that reflect that sense of history and character. I source pieces from different eras and styles and pass those finds along to someone new who will love them just as much.
Ruby felt like the right name because each piece is a gem in its own way—meant to be found again, not forgotten. Red has always been part of my story, from my hair to my engagement ring to my daughter’s name.
