Het woord is afgeleid van het Griekse woord "Ontotita", wat 'entiteit' betekent. Het vindt zijn oorsprong in ὄν, wat 'het zijn', 'dat wat bestaat' betekent, en draagt de betekenis van essentie in zich, de kracht van 'ik ben' en de vrouwelijke dimensie van het bestaan.
