Dalikamata Print: Visayan Goddess, Filipino Art - REVAMP

Seller's description

Dalikamata was known as a beautiful Visayan Goddess who was worshipped by our ancestors. She was described to have a thousand eyes all over her body. Not only was she beautiful, but she was sympathetic towards humans and even wept for their misfortunes or evil deeds.

It is said that when she cried, her tears became the morning dew, therefore, the ancient Babylans collected her "tears" and used it as a remedy towards those who had eye ailments.

Dalikamata was feared by our ancestors because she had the ability to see the past, know the present, and predict the future. She used winged animals like the owl and hawk because of their strong sense of sight and the ability to see things from a distance. Dalikamata was believed to use butterflies and moths to help watch over each person's good or bad actions on Earth, hence the reason why these flying insects have the eye pattern along their wings.

Interesting enough, when the Spaniards colonized the Philippines, Dalikamata was "replaced by St. Lucia who is the patroness saint against eye diseases and defects of the Roman Catholic religion", stated by Luzviminda Philippines.
