This wood wall art piece is our take on the wall decor pieces that were in every home during the mid-century era. The edge grain Baltic birch sun rests atop a horizon of walnut veneered Baltic birch, and three birds of the same material, in three sizes, glide through the air in front of the sun. Every room needs wall art, or maybe it’s better to say that every room needs the Edge of the Horizon wall art.
Inspired in part by the mid-century wall art that everyone’s family had on their wall, and in part by an accidental drop (and break) of a circular cut of edge grain Baltic birch, we just adore this 43” long wall piece.
It’s the kind of wall decor that stops you in your tracks. At first maybe you don’t know exactly what you’re looking at, but the more time you spend looking, the more the sun starts to shine through, and before you know it, you’ve named the birds and given them a backstory. To be clear, the big one’s name is Roy (if you get that reference, send us a message and we’ll include a bit of Hossle Woodworks goodies with your order).
The horizon is Baltic birch europly with a walnut veneer finish. The three birds are too, but they’ve got a generous round-over on them which highlights the edge grain. The sun is the same material, except we’ve turned it on its side, so all you see is the edge grain.
(note that most of the piece is ¾”D but the birds sit on the surface and add additional depth)
This highly designed, yet simple work of art will look good in any room in your home - above a couch, over a headboard, or maybe on the wall behind the dining room table.
Handcrafted in Minneapolis.
Materials:
(01) Veneered Baltic Birch
Our decor pieces are made using a beautiful high-end Baltic birch plywood from Columbia Forest Products®. Each of the 13 layers of the ply are solid wood, and a thick veneer in walnut or maple wraps each face in rich tones. The Baltic birch is a sustainable product and will be very stable as the seasons change, unlike some solid wood products.
While many woodworkers conceal the edges of the plywood, we have made it our signature look to highlight the striped layers. Not only does this give a nod to the designers of the mid-century era, it makes every piece by Hossle Woodworks a work of art, and a unique, one-of-a-kind, creation.
(02) Finish
We finish our products with a mixture of pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil and wax. This means less harsh chemicals when we are doing the work, and a safer breathing experience for you. The end result is a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like a silky-smooth piece of wood.
Another benefit to the finish is that it allows for easy repair when scratches happen. Buff out the scratch with a piece of high-grit sandpaper and rub in some Howard Feed-N-Wax® and your piece is as good as new!
A NOTE ON RETURNS: Each piece from Hossle Woodworks is handmade and unique. Variations in wood tone, grain quality, measurements, are what make handcrafted one-of-a-kind items special, and should be expected. We create our pieces as precisely as possible, however slight imperfections are not uncommon. The products are made using a veneered plywood, so occasional blemishes in the wood and veneer (voids, indents, minor scratches) may occur. We do our best to repair or conceal these. All returns from Etsy orders, whether for this reason or not, will incur a minimum 35% restocking fee and shipping costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. Please take this into consideration before purchasing an item from Hossle Woodworks.
Items damaged during shipping are eligible for exchange. Customer must provide detailed images of the damaged box and item. Damage does not include variations in wood grains, small voids or indents in the ply layers, or minor scratches on the veneer.
