This is a classical plague doctor's hat, modeled after the engraving by Paul Fürst done in 1656. It is part of the historical plague doctor's costume, and is designed to accompany our various plague doctor masks, which we have listed for sale separately. It comes in two sizes. The Medium/Large size should fit most adults. We've made it rather large as it is to be worn over a mask, a balaclava or hood, and perhaps a cowl. Inside circumference of crown measures 24". If your head circumference is larger than about 23 ½" we offer the hat in XL size for an additional $15 where the circumference of crown measures 25½". The plague doctor hat is not designed to fit like a normal hat because it needs to fit over the leather straps and buckle. It is designed it to rest on the top of your head with the chin strap to help hold it on. The sweatband should not be touching your head. It is better to have it too large than too small as it won't fit down on your head properly.

The hat is made from full grain vegetable tanned cowhide. There is a spring steel wire sewn into the edge of the brim to help hold its shape. The crown has been wet-formed over a custom built hat block, and flares out at the top. It has been coated with a stiffener to keep its shape, however it should not be worn in the rain as it can lose its shape if it gets wet. The hat comes with a soft leather sweatband and on the inside top is a portrayal of the Fürst engraving. It is painted black with flexible acrylic latex paint. The hat comes with a removable, adjustable chin strap. This hat is identical to the ones worn by the Swedish band Ghost.

CARING FOR YOUR MASK
The leather masks are quite durable. When storing them, keep them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. The worst enemy is water, as the masks will soften and distort when wet, so don't wear them in the rain, in the pool, or in the shower. Heat will dry them out and make the leather crack. No regular maintenance is required. If they become soiled, wipe with a soft cloth.

This hat is amazing not only does it fit my 23.5 head and it fits over my mask as well. Shipping was quick and I enjoy everything I have bought from the Banwells!

The hat was very surprising to see in person the first time. It was much larger than expected which turns out to be great! Fits over a hood and mask no problem at all. The under-chin string works great for holding in place. Really completes the set.

Perfect and wonderfully crafted! I have a small head, so it's rather large on me, but it fits just right when I have my plague doctor mask on as well. Very happy to finally have this lovely hat!
