What is Niobium?
If you have allergies or sensitivities to metals, Niobium or Anodized Niobium may be a solution for you. Especially when it comes to any type of jewelry that comes in close contact with your skin, like earrings, rings, and body piercings. Niobium is Nickel and allergen free, lightweight, scratch, tarnish, and corrosion resistant and extremely safe to wear.
This jewelry is made from Anodized Niobium. These vibrant colors are created by immersing the wire into an electrolytic bath through which an electric current is passed, causing an oxide layer to form on the surface of the metal, which changes how light is reflected off of the surface. This is how we recognize color. Again, the color effects are generated by electricity and is NOT an added color, but a clear oxide and we see the “color” through reflection and refraction of light. In no way does it change the hypoallergenic nature of this metal. This is NOT electroplating, which is where they add a metal or a colored metal to the base metal. Anodizing metal protects it from corrosion and was first used in 1923 to protect seaplane parts that were constantly exposed to sea water.
