Our Rain & Mountains (Lluvia y Montanas) Zapotec Rug is made of 100% sheep's wool and natural dyes to combine historical Zapotec inspiration with contemporary design. These rugs are woven on hand-operated looms from wool obtained from local sheep in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, and dyed mainly with local, natural dyes such as those obtained by the cochineal insect.
These rugs are handmade by Isaac Vásquez García’s Bug in The Rug Master Weavers Studio. Garcia is known as a master weaver and dyer and the oldest living member of one of the oldest weaving families in Teotitlán del Valle, México. Isaac Vásquez García pioneered the renaissance of using pre-Hispanic natural dyes on pure wool and has over 70 years of experience working sheep's wool on a pedal loom and dyeing it with natural ingredients. Isaac and his family take great pride in keeping this tradition alive, despite the more time-consuming and expensive nature of these methods when compared with the more modern use of chemical dyes and acrylic fiber. They perform all steps by hand, taking the raw material wool to finish rug carding, spinning, dyeing, and weaving.
