Ice crystals are one of the most magical elements on Earth. This 8X10 macro photo captures one of nature's most beloved phenomena, hoar frost.

Frost is both incredibly beautiful and extremely delicate; it is a tangled web of frozen water composed of thousands of intricate shapes and designs.

Here is a bit about this particular photo:

Something magical happens along Deer Creek when temperatures dip low during the night and early morning hours. The warmth from the creek creates fog along the banks that clings to the trees frosting them in ice crystals up to an inch thick.

On this particular morning, temperatures were in the low teens and the ground was already covered in a few inches of snow from the previous days’ storm. These moments only last a very short time because as soon as the sun hits the trees, the crystals begin to fall like glitter and the landscape returns to normal.
