Vintage from the 1900s

Materials: Antique wind up toy, tin litho, frabric

On sale! Charming antique tin litho wind-up toy from Germany -- the "Balky Mule Cart" driven by a smiling clown. The toy was made by Lehman in the early 1900s. The clown has a (very worn) cloth body with red tin legs, puffy sleeves, a jagged collar, and a head that flops around when the cart is going. The large wheels have great graphics of tumbling clowns, and another dancing clown is on the back of the cart. The mule is metal with a gray flocking on it. He has floppy ears and legs and a string tail. The reins are not original, but are essential for the mule to buck up and down as the cart goes. It works but a little sporadically, but really moves once you get it going. The clown moves up and down and back and forth, and the cart can go both backwards and forwards.

The tin part of the cart is in good condition for its age, with some wear and staining but no holes or major rust (see photos). The cloth portion of the clown is stained and torn.

Size: 7.75 inches long x 3 inches wide x 5.75 inches tall (with clown extended)

Note: This is being sold as a collectible and should not be given to small children.

I really love my watermelon basket! I love these so much. I recall when they came out. I bought my first one that I adored at a tiny shop filled with wonderful things in it called Ninepatch in Berkeley, CA. I grew up in Berkeley. I had no idea that these watermelon baskets were sold everywhere. I guess I thought back then that they were only sold in one of my favorite little shops! I am now trying to find other shapes as well..like the long versions of them! They are adorable. I have "collections of collections" as my husband likes to always say! 😄 I love trinket boxes so, ...even teeny tiny or just small boxes make me happy!
