1930s Pale Shell Pink Lace Bias Cut Gown Dress with Back Interest and Short Sleeved Jacket With Slit Puff Sleeves, Lapels and Peplum

This is 1930s perfection. There is so much packed into this set, everything that is great about 1930s fashion. It is made from a very pale pink shell pink lace. The lace feels cotton based (it has a matte finish) and is mostly a dense floral pattern with spaces of mesh in between. It is sheer, shown on Faye with nothing underneath, so you will need a slip or very nice underwear.

The dress or gown is bias cut so hugs the figure from top to toe (or ankle) but has a bit of stretch so is comfortable. The front has an inverted V seam under the bust and a V neckline. The shoulder straps have a slight collar effect and they go over the shoulders and down the back in a V to meet the back of the dress a few inches above the waist. There are belt loops but no belt. There are side snaps to help get this on. The dress on its own, with that back interest, is quite lovely, but it comes with a jacket.....

The jacket has short sleeves. You can keep them down in which case they are nearly elbow length or you can push them up the bicep for a puffed effect and to show off the fact that each sleeve has two slits (one at the front and one at the back). Photo 5 shows them down, photo 6 more pushed up. The jacket is fitted at the waist and has a single hook and eye closure there. Below the waist seam, the jacket has a lovely peplum. It also has some fantastic lapels which are quite wide over the shoulders and drape nicely down the front.

This set is shown on Faye (also from the 1930s) who measures 34-25-35 and I have to say is a perfect fit on her. You can be less, but not more than 34-25-35. Whilst this dress is bias cut and does have a bit of stretch, it is also 80 year old lace. The dress is 55 inches long from the shoulder strap and the skirt about 42 inches long from where the belt loop is which is a bit above Faye's natural waist. Faye is about 5'8" tall and this hits her at the ankle. The only static bit of the set is the waist of the jacket which is 26 inches which just affirms that the max waist you should be is 25 inches. The shoulders of the jacket are 14 inches wide. The length is 19 inches.

I have put some work into this set. It is clean (freshly washed) and there is only a few marks near the hem and some very, very faint under arm marks on the jacket (but no smell). None of that is easily visible. The dress was in good shape but did have some breaks in the lace. I have repaired them all as far as I can see. Even with the breaks, the dress seemed fairly sturdy for lace, but I have secured the breaks anyway. I did some before I took photos and the rest after so if you are zooming in and see breaks, they are now gone and you would be hard pressed to find them. As lace goes, this style is fairly easy to repair and in the main you can repair so they are almost invisible. The jacket was worse. It had loads of breaks. When you put the jacket on over the dress, most were hard to see where they overlaid the dress. But I fixed them all anyway. I am quite pleased with the results. The jacket was about making it secure and disguising the breaks as best as possible. Most repairs blend but some are noticeable when you go looking because they were big. At a glance you will not see them and the important thing is that they have made the jacket whole and secure (as secure as lace is) again. But they are not invisible when scrutinising. I am really pleased with how it turned out though and can say that all the breaks (I may have missed a few) on both pieces have been attended to. It looks pretty good if I say so myself. I would like to say it is in excellent condition for being 30s lace, but I would just say it is now in good condition as it has been repaired and is priced accordingly.

Just one quick word about wear and care. This is old lace. It feels fairly sturdy as far as lace goes. The reason I say the max size is 34-25-35 is so as to not put strain on them when wearing. It will always be more delicate than a solid fabric (it always was). Wear with care. After wearing, check over for any issues and attend to them if possible. Store folded, not hanging so as not to put strain on the fabric when not wearing. This set is beautiful. It can be worn. A slip will help as then the fabric won't grab the body. But it is delicate.
