Here is a wonderful little find from the elegant 1920s/early 1930s Art Deco era - a lovely engine turned stripe design with a rectangular name plate with the name 'Viola' engraved within. This appears to be silver plated metal - all the appearance of silver but no hallmark usually indicates that it is actually silver-plated. Inside there is a rotating sifter disc which dispenses the powder onto the puff in an orderly fashion - see photos 2-4 for the action.
There are two powder puffs inside, the larger one for the powder and the tiny one for the rouge, of which there are still reddish pink remnants in place. Attached to two of the sides is a ring and bar chain which creates a carrying handle, or perhaps it was used to hang this somewhere when not in use.
This measures 5.3cms square x 9mm thick (2 1/8" square x 3/8" thick) and is in excellent condition for its great age.

CONDITION:-
The condition is excellent, and this is quite surprising considering it's nigh on eighty years old. Someone has taken good care of this for the last seventy or so years. There are a few teensy surface scratches in the silver-plating metalwork. The mirror is not so good, having a good deal of fogging - you can still just about see yourself in it though. This is only to be expected in such a vintage item. However, the design is lovely and would make a superb addition to your vintage Art Deco 1930s/1940s collection.

ART DECO
Art Deco is the popular style of visual arts, architecture and design that first appeared in France just before World War I. Art Deco influenced the design of buildings, furniture, jewellery, fashion, cars, movie theatres, trains, ocean liners, and everyday objects such as radios and vacuum cleaners. It took its name, short for 'Les Arts Décoratifs', from the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925. It combined modern styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials. During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, exuberance, and faith in social and technological progress.

The distinguishing features of the style are simple, clean geometric shapes, often with a “streamlined” look; ornament that is also geometric, or stylised from natural forms, and unusually varied, often expensive materials, including man-made plastics, especially Bakelite, in addition to natural ones (jade, silver, ivory, obsidian, chrome, and rock crystal). Though Art Deco objects were rarely mass-produced, the characteristic features of the style reflected admiration for the modernity of the machine and for the inherent design qualities of machine-made objects (e.g., relative simplicity, symmetry, and unvaried repetition of elements)
