Crinoid Fossils
As an artist, I look around in my daily life for materials to work into my art. I’ll see some odd object and think “hey, I could make jewelry out of that.” Materials in this piece are reflective of that.
This year while at the big mineral show in Arizona, I found a flat of crinoid fossils. Some were already hollow. Some I had to slice and drill to make beads.
Crinoids are echinoderms related to starfish, sea urchins, and brittle stars. Like other members of their phylum they are spiney skinned, have a five-sided or pentaradial symmetry as adults and a calcium carbonate endoskeleton.
Although crinoids are the least understood of living echinoderms, their skeletal remains are among the most abundant and important of fossils. Crinoids were major carbonate producing organisms during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic: hundreds of millions of years ago. In fact, in many Paleozoic and Mesozoic settings entire carbonate shelves were composed predominantly of crinoidal remains. In such examples, the enormous volume of skeletal material controlled the sedimentary environment.
I have paired these crinoid fossils with conch shell, buffalo horn, and a single bead of yak bone inlaid with coral and turquoise that I purchased while traveling in Nepal.
This necklace is strung on leather thong which is adjustable for length.
