Not only does Race to 100 build understanding of our number system (making a ten, place value), but it has been (dare I say) my magic wand for students understanding addition with regrouping.

Before I dove into addition with regrouping, this was my first lesson. After playing, we discussed the process of exchanging 10 ones for a ten using the game board (I have included detailed direction on how I bridge this game to regrouping). After relating this game to regrouping, I had very little, if any, misconception about the skill.
