The Starry Night is an 1889 oil painting by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. It depicts the view from the east-facing window of his asylum room at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, just before sunrise, with the addition of an imaginary village. Vincent wrote to his brother, Theo, "This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big".
