Highlights
Society Garlic live plants. The leaves and flowers have a strong garlic smell and are edible. Gophers and moles do not like this plant.
Society Garlic live plants will be shipped bare root. 1 Society Garlic Pot and 3 Society Garlic Pot comes with soil and a nursery pot. The leaves will start to turn yellow until they are planted in soil and the roots become established in soil. When you receive your plants the roots should be placed in water or kept moist until they are planted in soil.
Characteristics
Society garlic is a clump-forming herb perennial with narrow, grass-like green leaves and clusters of small lilac flowers. Leaves reach about a foot tall and flowers rise up on stalks about two feet tall. The tubular flowers open up at the end to look like six pointed stars. Tolerant of both cold and drought, this plant grows and flowers in warm months. The leaves smell of garlic when disturbed, so keep this in mind when selecting a location for planting. Having society garlic in a high traffic area may be visually attractive, but unless you like the constant smell of garlic every time the plant is brushed against, this placement is not ideal. On the brighter side, it's also resistant to deer damage. Gophers and moles do not like this plant.
Planting and Care
Society garlic is great for a sunny, water-wise garden. This easy-to-grow plant prefers sandy soil, and performs best in terms of flowering with full sun; it can be grown in partial shade but it will not flower well. Plants thrive with regular watering during the growing season, less frequent watering when flowering, and reduced watering during the winter dormant period. Established plants will be able to survive extended droughts when necessary. Society garlic can tolerate moderate frosts and light freezes. Yes, society garlic will very likely return after a snow, as it is a tough, half-hardy plant that can withstand cold temperatures and even freezing conditions, especially when the soil is mulched to protect the roots. The snowy conditions can even act as protection, blanketing the plant and keeping it warm, and any damage to the above-ground foliage from ice and snow will usually not affect the roots, allowing it to regrow in the spring.
Why Society Garlic Survives Snow
Cold Tolerance:
Society garlic (Tulbaghia violacea) is known to tolerate light freezes and frosts, and a layer of snow provides insulation and protection from harsh temperatures.
Root Protection:
The roots of garlic plants can grow in soil that isn't frozen, and even if the tops are damaged by snow or ice, the roots will remain protected in the ground.
Regrowth:
If the above-ground parts of the plant die back from the cold and snow, the plant will regenerate new growth from the established roots in the spring.
What to Do After a Snowstorm
1. Check for Damage:
Look at the plants to see if the foliage has died back or been flattened by the snow.
2. Mulch:
If the plants were not already mulched, consider adding a layer of leaf mulch to protect the roots and prevent the soil from freezing too deeply.
3. Scout for Uplifted Bulbs:
In the spring, after the snow has melted, inspect the garden for any garlic cloves that may have been pushed to the surface by the freeze-thaw cycle.
4. Rebury and Tidy:
Gently push any exposed cloves back into the soil, and trim away any dead or damaged foliage to give the new growth room to sprout.
You can propagate your plants easily by dividing the clumps while the plant is dormant. When grown outdoors, plants spread slowly by roots but are not considered aggressive. Society garlic is also great for growing in containers however it will still need bright sunlight for best results.

I ordered 2 strawberry plants and several society garlic plants, and got hooked up with a huge bunch of garlic, an extra strawberry plant, and free marigold seeds! Everything looks healthy, was packed with care, and shipped fast. Thank you!!
Plants look great, travel time was perfect. The little guys are planted, they should be wonderful. Thank you
Good healthy plants packed well.
I have never received plants in the mail that were in such great shape. Amazing quality and I think they can’t count. I ordered ten and when I started separating and planting them, there are close to thirty. They also threw in a packet of marigold seeds I think. The garlic smell is amazing. I planted some in flower beds and by the pool. So many I put some in a pot! Excited to see them grow and see the flowers. I’ll definitely look at their other products and see what else I can get. Thank you!
