Unique handmade brown hue Whitby jet pendant, 100% natural, round shape with fine silver.

All metal is fine silver (99.99% pure) except the chain which is made of sterling silver (hallmarked with "925" hallmark). The chain is the unique thing which is not handmade.

The jet is authentic jet from Whitby, situated on the east coast of Yorkshire (England).

This piece of jet presents a slight brown hue on some parts of its surface under strong warm light with a temperature colour of about 2500K (Kelvin). Jet with this characteristic, called "brown jet", is much rarer than common ones and its price is often much higher. That brown hue can usually not be seen by the naked eye unless it is under some special light circumstances as the one described before (this can happen in some places depending on the time of the day and weather, just with direct sun light).

It was not treated in any way, just polished. Totally natural and genuine Whitby jet.

Whitby jet, which is a Jurassic jet, is about 181 million years old.

Genuine jet, which was thought in the past -erroneously- to be a very rare kind of hard and stable lignite, is in fact a very rare kind of humic coal, belonging to the bituminous coal category, which is at the same time a perhydrogenated coal thanks to the absortion of hydrocarbons during its creation. These oils as well as the greatest pressure and some other special conditions are the ones which brought this material its stability and special characteristics as its triboelectric properties. Considered sometimes as a kind of fossilized wood of some special trees which lived among dinosaurs. Real jet is more scarce than diamonds nowadays and many other precious gemstones. Its price has increased and it is expected to increase much more with the time, as it can only be found in some places of very few countries in the world and legal mines have been all closed many years ago and they will not be opened again.
