1950s RED METAL SCHOOL DESK WITH INKWELL
It was a fine spring day back in 1961 at Booksin Elementary School but Roy Goble was not in the best of moods. He lifted his school desk top and threw his lunch bag in with little regard for the peanut butter and grape jelly sandwich that it held. Not even the promise of the cellophane wrapped Twinkie could quell his anger. He slammed his hand down on the desktop, crossed his arms in disgust--frustrated with his unbelieving classmates. Sure he may have stretched the truth now and again, but what fourth grader hadn’t? But when a kid says his mom is going to pick him up from school in a Rolls Royce and swears on his bag of marbles, that’s pretty serious. Only his best friend Greg actually believed Roy’s proclamation. After all, Greg lived down the street from Roy and he’d seen firsthand many amazing things take place at the Goble home.
By the time the clock struck 2:55 and the bell rang, Roy’s anger had turned to resolve. He tapped Greg on the shoulder and without a word the two of them quietly gathered their books and walked single-file toward the door, heads held high, ignoring the giggles and snickers of their schoolmates. The two boys stood at attention on the curb like two sailors awaiting their ship coming to port while several of the other kids were still slinging insults. But unbelievers all fell silent and their jaws dropped as the long, silver Rolls slowly came along side the two boys. Without a word, Roy opened the back door and slid inside. Greg got in next to him and as the car eased away from the curb he smiled and waved at the cast of characters who were watching in disbelief from the curb. Roy would have none of that, he stared straight ahead and began to eat his saved Twinkie in dignity and grace.
