These posters focus on foundational spelling rules that will help students make sense of tricky words and spelling patterns. The set includes the following rules:
1. Every syllable should have at least one vowel letter.
2. Q is always written with the letter u.
3. When c comes before e, i, or y, it must say /s/.
4. When g comes before e, i, or y, it may say /j/.
5. English words cannot end with i, j, q, u, or v (exceptions apply for foreign words, acronyms, and abbreviations).
6. When a vowel is at the end of a syllable, it may say its name.
7. When e or i cannot be used at the end of a word, use y instead.
8. Final Silent E (Job 1): Can make a vowel say its name.
9. Final Silent E (Job 2): Can make c say /s/ and g say /j/.
10. Final Silent E (Job 3): Can prevent words from ending in illegal letters (see Rule 5).
11. Final Silent E (Job 4): Can add a vowel to the final syllable.
12. Final Silent E (Job 5): Can stop words from looking like plurals.
