The custom of cutting scenes or ornamental motifs in paper is an activity carried out days before the Day of the Dead. But the papel picado goes beyond a simple ornament for the offering dedicated to the faithful departed.
Nowadays it has been replaced by colorful tablecloths of papel picado (cut tissue paper) with allegorical motifs of death and the dead. From representing the gods, it has come to represent the deceased.
Papel picado is an ancient Mexican handicraft that comes from the Aztecs and is now used in this festivity, in national holidays and special occasions such as weddings and Quinceañeras.
Each papel picado has different colors, which were adapted to a new rite, at the time of the evangelization. Orange represents mourning; purple refers to the Catholic religion; blue refers to the deceased who died a death related to water; red is for warriors or women who died during childbirth; green is for the young; white for children; yellow for the elderly and black symbolizes the underworld.
