Real Bayberry Wax Hand Dipped Gift Wrapped 8 inch Taper Candles

These special traditional 8 Inch long x .75 inch wide at the base candles were lovingly hand dipped using pure cotton wicks. Most days I'm hustling around the clock between several wax melting vats, dipping and trimming to ensure your candle is made as fresh as possible to when you order it. 

Size:
Each full size taper is dipped to 8 inches long with a standard base diameter of 0.75 inches/

Burn Time:
I plan for at least 1 hour per inch of full size candle when the wick is trimmed to 1/4 inch before lighting. Burn time will lengthen in cooler homes and/or when the wick is kept short. Burn time will shorten in warmer spaces and with a wick left too long.

Finishes:
Sometimes the wax likes to be unique. Drips, bumps, etc. form on the surface of the candle can appear due to magical happenings inside the wax vat. It's not often, but when these are available I offer them to people who love unique candles. The last photo in the collection shows a few examples of the minor imperfections that make these special candles so sought after.

The Scent Blend:
Bayberry wax has very little fragrance on its own. The process to render the wax from the berries uses the "wet" process of boiling the berries in water until the film of waxy substance rises to the top and can be carefully skimmed off.  Any tiny amounts of scent the berries had is leached into the water bath and gathered for the perfumery industry. The resulting wax is smooth, creamy and largely without any fragrance at all.

For those of us who enjoy a little more of a sensory experience, I created an optional blend of fragrance and essential oils to conjure the feeling of being in a cold winter woods, how I imagine the scents to be as my ancestors gathered the berries for the winter lighting. I use the essential oils of various pine and fir needles, camphorous notes as in the myrtle leaves on the shrubs, herbaceous notes from garden herbs that would be drying on the mantle, and spicy notes found in clove buds and cinnamon leaves to remind me of the happiness of the holiday season. All of those natural notes are folded into a bit of my own fragrance oil that contains notes I cannot replicate from nature. The result is a beautiful nod to the courageous people who came before us.

Packaging:
The joined candle pairs are wrapped with in tissue paper sealed with my iconic sticker, then wrapped in honeycomb paper, sealed by a kraft card tag tied with paper raffia with the legend on the back. If ordering multiple taper pairs, each pair will be individually wrapped with the honeycomb paper and tag so you can give them away as ready-to-go gifts.

Bayberry Wax History:
In early Colonial times supplies for survival were in short supply. Traditionally the women of the house were responsible for gathering things to help the family survive the long, hard winters. Bayberry shrubs grew in abundance on the shores. People quickly learned that the berries of the shrub contained a wax that was valuable for candles to illuminate the home.

Bayberry wax is one of the rarest and most expensive waxes known in today's market. Berries of the Myrtle shrub are gathered as they were in early Colonial days, then painstakingly boiled to release the wax that has been a traditional mainstay during the holidays to bring heath and wealth in the new year.

My Bayberry candles are made of real bayberry wax, not a bayberry colored or scented substitute. Bayberry wax is extremely brittle on its own. To protect your investment, we blend just the right amount of pure beeswax to ensure that your candles will burn bright and clean and not easily shatter.
