Japanese Samuari Woodblock Print Reproductions
Yamaji Shogen Masakuni, c.1820s by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1862)
Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1862) was one of the last great masters of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and painting. The range of Kuniyoshi's preferred subjects included many genres: landscapes, beautiful women, Kabuki actors, cats, and mythical animals, and most famously for his depictions of the battles of samurai and legendary heroes.
During the course of his career he produced numerous warrior prints, drawing much of his subjects from war tales such as Tale of the Heike (Heikei monogatari) and The rise and fall of the Minamoto and the Taira (Genpei seisuki). His warrior prints were unique in that they depicted legendary popular figures with an added stress on dreams, ghostly apparitions, omens, and superhuman feats.
Kuniyoshi’s prints in this series are from Heroic Biographies from the Tale of the Great Pacification (Taiheiki eiyu den) which depicted the most well known samurai warriors from the last stages of the Japanese civil wars of the sixteenth century.

**the giclee process produces a high quality, fine art reproduction from a high-resolution digital file of an image. The file is then printed with a high-resolution photo generation printer on a fine art paper. Most artists and working photographers today use the giclee process to produce reproductions of their original artwork and photographs.
As with any original art or fine art reproduction, it is recommended that prints are framed and displayed under glass to prevent color fade or shift over the years.
