Jólakötturinn was first documented in the 19th century but believed to have older Norse origins. According to legend, this enormous black cat roams the snowy Icelandic countryside on Christmas Eve, preying on those who haven't received new clothing before the holiday. The myth was likely used by farmers and textile workers to motivate laborers to finish processing the autumn wool harvest — those who worked hard earned new garments, while the idle were left vulnerable to the Yule Cat's hunger. Some versions of the tale depict the cat as a companion to the giantess Grýla and her son, while others portray it as a solitary predator. Over time, the legend evolved from a labor incentive into a beloved, if eerie, part of Iceland's Christmas tradition..
