Tiffany stone is extremely rare and is only found in one place on Earth, the Brush Wellman Beryllium mine in western Utah, USA. It was excavated in the 1960s with the discovery of bertrandite, the main mineral mined for its beryllium content, although it contains less than 1%. Beryllium is a silver gray metallic element, non-magnetic, stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum, used in aerospace, telecommunications, information technology, defense, medical and nuclear industries. Brush Wellman's mining and refining plant is the only source of processed beryllium in the US and the only known fully integrated beryllium company in the world. The extraction process involves crushing huge amounts of material yielding only 1 to 2 percent beryllium ore, which is also why Tiffany stone is so rare and expensive as few stones survive this extraction process.

Tiffany stone is sometimes called opal fluorite, bertrandite, beryllium ore and ice opalite because of its creamy, swirling appearance. Tiffany stone is primarily composed of opalized fluorite which produces its signature blend of rich purples, blue-violet, lavender and creams. It is usually punctuated by intertwining veins or spots of quartz, chalcedony, dolomite, rhodonite, manganese oxides, bertrandite, beryl, and either solid white or translucent yellowish opal. Depending on the concentration of minerals, it has a hardness on the Mohs scale ranging from 4 to 7. The name Tiffany stone is often mistakenly attributed to Tiffany & Co. from New York, the origin of the name is also linked to a miner who picked up the stone nodules for his daughter, Tiffany.
