This crocheted collar pattern is based on a design published by Godey’s Magazine in 1863, right in the midst of the Civil War. The original used a base chain of 360 stitches so I would venture that the thread was probably a size 30 or finer and used a 1.0mm or smaller hook. Neither my eyes or hands can work so small any more so I’ve converted the pattern to a thread size more commonly used these days. I’ve made no other changes. The collar will require blocking when finished to properly show off the large scallops.
Finished size (blocked) is 16.5” at the neckband and 4.25” from the neckband to the bottom of the large scallop. I have a 14” neck and the collar sits comfortably where a standard jewel neckline would. It also fits nicely under a shirt collar.
