This ornamental grass produces fluffy seed heads that look like cotton. These are wonderful as dried flowers for use in floral arrangements or to add interest to flower borders and beds. Grows 24-32” tall with a 6-12” spread. Hardy in USDA Zones 4-9. Prefers acidic, moist to wet, peaty soil. Full sun. (Eriophorum vaginatum)

Of note, the instructions below are standard for the species, but I did have indoor germination without a chilling period in temps of approximately 75 deg. F days/68 nights without any cold stratification, so try that first. Grow on in cool conditions before planting outdoors in late spring.

Seed sowing instructions: Recommended: Sow seed directly outdoors in the fall or very early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked up. Alternatively, sow the seed in cell packs or small pots and keep warm (64-72 deg F.) and moist for the first 2–4 weeks. After this period the sowing must be kept at a cold temperature, between 25 and 39°F. for another 4–6 weeks. Place the cell packs or pots into plastic Ziploc bags (so they don’t dry out) and place in a cold garage or the refrigerator (not the freezer). After this cooling-period move into a cool area (41-54 deg. F.) for germination. Even if germination has started, don’t put in an area that is warmer than this. Continue to grow on and plant out after all danger of frost.
