Rigid-heddle looms are beautiful tools that can produce gorgeous cloth. They are not, I promise you, just beginner looms. People can spend a lifetime weaving on a rigid-heddle loom and produce so many unique and lovely projects that are certainly both artistic and professional…not beginner at all. One of my favorite things on this particular type of loom is how you can really explore texture in a very methodical way. The first real textured cloth I learned was the waffle weave on a rigid-heddle loom. Taking some time and creating small samples can really help with understanding the structure and what each pass of your shuttle and lift or lowering of your heddle is actually doing. Once you understand how a texture is created, you can push outward- you can create variation within the structure itself. That is what this quick sample/project is all about. If you can understand how to create a simple waffle weave, like really understand it, you can go crazy in creating all kinds of cloth with this delightful texture. Also, washcloths make lovely quick, practical weaves if you are craving a project that will not languish on your loom for months. The waffle weave itself really lends itself well to cotton fibers and towels or wash cloths. I hope this quick sampler pattern helps give wings to your texture exploration.
