Why we use veg tan leather.
There are mainly two types of tanning methods, “chrome tanning” and “veg tanning.” The chrome tanning practice uses different types of acids and chemicals to tan the leather; this method is the fastest, and tanneries are able to produce a lot more hides because of how quickly they can process them. The down side of this method is that these chemicals break down the proteins in the leather, which causes the leather to disintegrate quicker. If you could imagine washing your skin with a harsh chemical like bleach it wouldn’t be long before your skin starts to be severely affected.
The “veg tanning” process uses more of an old-fashioned approach. The hides are actually soaked in tree bark which cures the leather and preserves all of its proteins. This process does take longer (up to six weeks per hide), which is why these hides are more expensive to buy. It’s worth it though—veg-tan leather is more lasting and wears beautifully. Although both tanning methods are still considered “genuine leather,” I firmly believe that veg leather produces higher quality goods that are more environmentally friendly and healthier for use.
