Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte and published in 1874, is another of my all-time favorite books. The strange, unexpected, sometimes spooky but romantic story of the young governess Jane and the handsome Mr Rochester she falls in love with always captures my imagination and makes me dream of misty wind swept countryside.
Bronte’s story is a real roller-coaster of emotion, and tells us a lot about the culture of her time. The hard rough hero that Jane falls for turns out to be a villainous liar, hiding his current wife locked in her rooms due to her mental illness and planning to marry Jane and try to live a normal life. But really Mr Rochester is no different from many, at a total loss what to do to help his first wife he does the best he can, making sure she’s looked after properly at home instead of shutting her away in an asylum. He does better by her than many did in that era.
The heroine of the book, the strong intelligent Jane Eyre, goes though hardship after hardship, abandoned and beaten as a child, losing her best friend to illness; then falling in love with a man only to find out about his first wife and her madness on her wedding day. She finds herself in a lonely country school teaching farmers daughters and wanting nothing more than to be left alone, but fate gives her another chance and she finds herself with money of her own when a long lost relative leaves her his fortune. After all the ups and downs we find Jane returning to Mr Rochester, finding him living in a cottage on his grounds after a tragic event that left his first wife dead and his manor burnt to the ground. He still loves Jane of course, and the tragic death of his first wife in the fire she lit leaves them free to marry at last.
What a story!
Jane is dressed in a pure silk wedding gown in a delicate ivory color made in two different silks, 100% silk cotton weave and habotai silk. The silk cotton has a lovely crisp weight to it and works really well with the soft floaty habotai. The hem, skirts and bodice are trimmed with fine guipure lace, with a shawl effect over her shoulders around the wide almost off the shoulder style of the era. Underneath her layers of underwear are correct to the period with split crotch drawers, a chemise, cotton petticoat and supporting layers made up of a stiff corded petticoat, one of flounced blue cotton, one in white cotton trimmed with embroidery anglaise, and a cream soft cotton petticoat trimmed with a wide hem border of lace. Her matching silk bonnet is trimmed with cream silk ribbons, delicate paper flowers and lace, and in her arms she carries a hoop of matching flowers that can be worn in her hair instead of the bonnet if you’d like. Lastly, Jane’s veil is a soft thin mouseline silk trimmed in guipure lace to match her dress.
She weighs approx. 600g, and she is 52cm tall.
She will be delivered to you securely wrapped and decorated, protected and with contact details; ready to give as a gift, or just because it’s always nice to receive nice parcels.
