The United States Postal Service issued this 32-cent US Department of the Air Force commemorative stamp on September 18, 1997, in Washington, DC.

It features four US Air Force Thunderbird aerial demonstration planes in flight, forming a classic diamond position. The stamp commemorates the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the US Air Force as a separate service from the Army.

A bit more history: The United States Post Office issued its first stamp on July 1, 1847. Since that time, over 5000 stamps have been released. Each stamp is given its own identification number called a Scott Number. This stamp has been designated as Scott Number 3167.
