Do you offer a guarantee?

Antique jewellery, by its very nature, is more fragile than modern jewellery and can be more prone to damage. Many of our pieces are 150 years old or more, it is part of their charm and they will require special care. We guarantee all our items as described but can not guarantee they won't need maintenance or repair due to use and wear. However, with a modicum of care, the jewellery you cherish of can last many more lifetimes to come. We accept no responsibility for pieces that become damaged whilst in your possession and such damaged items cannot be returned. Treat your jewellery as you would treat a beloved elderly friend, with respect, kindness and in a gentle manner.

Do you offer ring sizing?

We do offer a re-sizing service for our rings please contact us with your ring size for a cost estimate. Please be aware that if you choose to have a ring sized, or a piece altered in any way, it is considered a customised item and is non-returnable.

Can I place a custom order?

We are unable to show our entire collection in our Etsy shop so if you are looking for something that we don't have please feel free to contact us by email, phone or through our website. We have many more items in stock than are listed and may have the perfect piece.

How do you identify and date your vintage and antique jewellery?

Vintage means older than 20 years old, and antique means over 100 years old. We do our utmost to accurately date and describe our jewellery. We use a variety of techniques, testing and observation. All precious metals are tested. We use both electronic testing equipment (Presidium Gold Karat Tester) and acid testing. All gemstones are tested with the Presidium Gemstone Tester and we use industry standard gauges and digital calipers for measuring gemstones. If we have a piece appraised we use independent gemologists and jewellers who have no connection to or vested interest in our shop.

Why Is Your Shop Based in the UK but Prices Listed in US Dollars?

We originally opened our Etsy shop in 2010 while based in the USA. Since then we have relocated back to the UK, however Etsy does not allow us to change the default currency of an existing payment account, so our Etsy shop continues to operate in US dollars. We also have our own website at mercymadge.com where our default currency is British pounds (GBP). Prices may vary slightly between platforms depending on the day’s exchange rate, but you are welcome to purchase from whichever location and currency is most convenient for you.

CAN I RETURN AN ITEM?

Yes, we accept returns for any reason. • Please notify us of your intention to return an item within 3 days of delivery. To qualify for a full refund, the item must be shipped back to us within 7 days of delivery (14 days for buyers in the European Union). • Returns that fall outside these timeframes may be accepted at our discretion and may be subject to a restocking fee. • Returned items must be in their original, unaltered condition. • For orders that qualified for free shipping, our original shipping costs will be deducted from the refund amount. • Buyers are responsible for return shipping costs. Declare country of origin as the UK *Any import charges incurred by Mercy Madge due to errors in labelling will be deducted from the refund owed. A commanding, statement-size antique deeply carved Whitby jet and sterling silver brooch in a truly distinctive design.

Whitby jet jewellery was famously favoured by affluent Victorian ladies, worn almost exclusively during extended periods of mourning. Pieces of this calibre were both a symbol of devotion and a quiet display of status.

Generously proportioned in a softly pillowed oval form, the jet has been masterfully hand-carved into an elaborate flowing ribbon motif. The craftsmanship is exceptional — intricate openwork piercings pass completely through the body of the jet, with a central peephole detail that enhances depth, light play, and dimensionality. The complexity of the carving leaves no margin for error; a single slip would have ruined the precious material. This is the work of a highly skilled Victorian jet carver.

The brooch is fitted with sterling silver findings, which is unusual for jet jewellery of the period. Even high-quality examples were typically mounted with brass fittings. The presence of sterling silver not only elevates the piece aesthetically but also sets it apart from more conventional examples. The fittings may be a later Victorian or slightly subsequent replacement, but they complement the brooch beautifully.

Whitby jet is a rare fossilised gemstone, formed over millions of years and found only in and around the cliffs of Whitby, England. Our shop is based in the heart of the historic Victorian Whitby jet industry, and all of our pieces are locally sourced, honouring this remarkable regional heritage.

CONDITION: remains in very good antique condition with no chips or cracks in the jet and the pin back in perfect order. There are the usual tooling marks on the back that you would expect to see in a hand wrought piece of antique Whitby jet jewellery.
