Highlights
A square (210mmx210mm) digital print featuring a Mari Lwyd on thick card stock.
The Mari Lwyd is part of a Welsh wassailing folk tradition in which a horse skull is decorated with ribbon and baubles. The skull is then used as a hobby horse of sorts and taken to different households where the householder engages in a game of rhyming verses or song with the Mari Lwyd. The householder traditionally denies entry in return through rhyme and song but if they repent it is tradition that the Mari Lwyd be let inside the house and be given food and drink.
This piece was created by Tom Smith as an accompaniment to the Wyrd Folk and Wives Tales issue of Knock Knock featuring folktale themed horror stories. It was drawn in vibrant pinks and blues to illustrate the playfulness as well as the vaguely sinister or unnerving quality of folk traditions when presented out of context.
Perfect as a gift or talking piece for lovers of folklore!
