Welcome Solitary Bees to your garden with this colorful, hand painted Bee House! The sides and roof have been hand painted in a lovely Sage Green and Forest. The Bee House has a rustic look that will eventually acquire a weathered patina. The central portion where the bees nest has been left natural, and there is a sturdy metal hanger on the back for hanging.
Solitary Bees are more efficient pollinators than honeybees! And unlike honey bees, Solitary bees are non-aggressive and will not bite or sting. The female Solitary Bee lays an egg inside the hole. She then provisions her egg with a ball of pollen that she has gathered, before sealing that cell with mud and laying another egg in the hole. The larvae pupate over the Winter, consuming the pollen ball that Momma Bee has provided for them. In the Spring they hatch as adults, and start the pollinating and egg-laying process again.
Place your Bee House next to your vegetable garden or flowers. A nearby source of damp dirt means the bees can spend more time pollinating, and less time looking for mud to close off the egg cells. Make sure your Bee House is protected from direct sun and sprinklers.
Each Bee House is iindividually hand made.
Approx. dimensions: ~5-1/2" x 5-1/2" x ~11"
The 3/8" hole size is commonly used by many species of mason, leaf cutter and orchard bees.
