Vesta Grand Tour Medallion Pendant - Roman Mythology Jewelry - Goddess of Home and Family

This listing is for one large medallion pendant in solid bronze depicting a scene from Roman mythology:
The goddess Vesta, holding in one hand the palladium, in the other; the sacred fire.

Vesta is the goddess of the hearth, home, and family in Roman mythology.

Vesta's presence is symbolized by the sacred fire that burned at her hearth and temples.
The sacred fire represents the domestic hearth and the palladium has a special meaning of protection.

The palladium was a statue of Pallas Athena known as "the luck of Troy".
In English, since circa 1600, the word "palladium" has meant anything believed to provide protection or safety — a safeguard.
All temples dedicated to Vesta were round, and had entrances facing east to symbolize connection between Vesta’s fire and the sun as sources of life.

The pendant is made from an antique genuine John Tyrrell plaster intaglio that dates back to the first half of the 1800's. The medallion has been made by hand using number 14 in the John Tyrrell plaster intaglio collection.
John Tyrrell bought Prince Poniatowskis neo-classical Grand Tour intaglio gems in the 1839 Christie's Auction House sale. He made plaster impressions of them and published a catalogue of the lot in 1841, republished in 1857 with photographs of them.
John Tyrrell thought the gems were very old antiques from gem engraving masters such as Gnaios, Dioscorides and Apollonides... They were really 18th Century fakes of the highest quality, and would later unravel as a huge Prince Poniatowski scandal.

The medallion pendants are made by hand in Myrtle Beach, SC by RQP Studio.
Please note that the medallion pendant has been through a oxidization process to give it a antique, vintage patina. The antique plaster cameo has been pressed into bronze by hand, and this makes each and every pendant unique. The medallion you will receive is similar to the ones in the pictures.
