All Nimble NiteCap seeds are packed in eco-friendly, compostable seed packets. Each packet is printed and designed in-house using vegetable-based inks on biodegradable, recycled materials. For very small seeds, extra protection may be used.

Are your seeds organic, heirloom, non-GMO and grown in the United States?

Yes! Every seed variety is heirloom or open-pollinated, organic, untreated, and non-GMO. I proudly support sustainable agriculture and have taken the Safe Seed Pledge — promising never to buy, sell, or distribute genetically engineered seeds. Yes. What’s the difference between heirloom and open-pollinated seeds?

All heirlooms are open-pollinated, but not all open-pollinated varieties are old enough to be called heirlooms. Heirlooms are varieties that have been passed down for generations, often 50 years or more, for their flavor, reliability, and history. Open-pollinated seeds produce true-to-type plants, so you can save your own seed year after year.

When will my order ship and how long will it take to receive my order?

Orders are carefully packed and shipped via USPS First Class (or Priority, if selected) in padded, eco-friendly mailers or recycled boxes. Most orders ship the next business day, though processing time may be slightly longer during peak planting season. USPS First Class Mail typically arrives within 3–7 business days within the U.S. You’ll receive a tracking number once your order ships. Shipping times can vary seasonally or due to carrier delays beyond our control.

What if my seeds don’t germinate?

I regularly test my seed lots to make sure they meet excellent germination standards. However, germination can be affected by temperature, moisture, and soil conditions. If you have any issues, please reach out — I’ll help you troubleshoot or replace packets that clearly don’t meet quality expectations.

Do you include growing instructions and how should I store my seeds?

Yes! Every Nimble NiteCap packet includes clear, easy-to-follow growing instructions for that variety. You can also find more detailed growing information right in each Etsy listing and on my website, where I go deeper into sowing, harvesting, and seed saving tips. Keep seeds in a cool, dry, and dark place — a sealed container in a closet or drawer is perfect. Avoid humidity, which can shorten their life. When stored properly, most seeds remain viable for several years, though herbs and alliums have a naturally shorter shelf life.

Can I plant your seeds in my region or climate?

Most of my varieties grow well across a wide range of U.S. zones. Each product listing includes USDA zone guidance and climate notes. If you’re not sure whether a variety will do well where you live, feel free to message me with your ZIP code — I’m happy to help you choose plants that will thrive in your area.

What if USPS says my package was delivered but I haven’t received it?

If tracking shows your order as “Delivered” but it’s not in your mailbox, please check with household members, neighbors, or your local post office — sometimes packages are scanned early. If it still doesn’t turn up, contact me and I’ll help initiate a missing mail investigation with USPS.

Yellow-edged red petals create a striking display on the rare, easy-to-grow wildflower. Fast growing, it does surprisingly well in even poor soil. Often blooming by the thousands - birds, butterflies & bees love them!

These curious little "Mexican Hats" make a fun cut flower, as well as being an interesting point of interest in wildflower gardens, prairies, meadows, and cottage gardens. The colorful flower heads resemble the traditional broad-brimmed, high-centered hat worn during Mexican fiestas.

This perennial is a native of the Great Plains, and so does well in hot, dry conditions. Native coneflowers have a reputation for establishing themselves in soil that few other plants would tolerate. They have a long-lived persistence, and also attract butterflies and songbirds.

English naturalist Thomas Nuttall first documented this species on one of his many expeditions throughout western America. The Latin name "columnifera" means "column," referring to the prominent center of each blossom.

• DIRECTIONS •

~ sowing ~

Direct sow in late fall, pressing into the surface of the soil since this plant needs light to germinate. For spring planting, mix the Mexican hat seeds with moist sand and store in the refrigerator for 30 days before planting.

Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, which usually takes 3-4 weeks. The Ratibida Columnifera Pulcherrima seeds can also be started indoors 8-10 weeks before planting in spring. Keep seedlings lightly moist, and transplant them as soon as they have developed several leaves.

Water seedlings regularly until they become established, and control weeds. When grown from seed, these plants usually begin blooming in their second year. Mature plants tolerate drought well and flourish in fairly dry soil, though they will benefit from occasional watering in dry weather.

The blooming period tends to be longer with occasional watering. Mature plants can be divided every 2-3 years for healthy growth. This plant attracts butterflies and repels deer, as well as growing well in rocky, sandy, or clay soil. It makes an excellent choice for hot, dry areas.

For cut flowers, choose stems with flowers that have just opened. Strip the foliage that will fall below the water level, and place in water immediately.

~ seed saving ~

After the petals fall from the blossom, the cone will darken and develop ripe seed. As soon as the seed turns nearly black and can be rubbed loose from the cone, cut the ripe cones from the plant and spread them to dry. Thresh the plant material to separate the seed from the stems. Store the Mexican hat seeds in a cool, dry place.
