White Swamp Milkweed Seeds - Asclepias incarnata

This member of the milkweed family is a deer resistant plant which grows in most garden soils, and blooms in July and August. Later, pods form which will break open to reveal seeds that will float away in the wind.

Swamp Milkweed attracts butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and resists deer and rabbits. It is an important nectar source for a wide range of butterflies, most notably the Monarch. The flowers smell like vanilla.

Seeds germinate after a period of cold, moist stratification. (NOTE: You do not need to stratify if you are planting in the fall.) Mix seed with a suitable plant starting medium. Place mixture in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator for 30 days. Check periodically to make sure the medium is not drying out. THESE SEEDS HAVE TO HAVE THIS COOL PERIOD TO GERMINATE. Plant immediately if the seeds begin to sprout. Blooms second year.

Though most animals will not eat plants in the milkweed family due to its bitter taste, it can be toxic for some grazing animals. Use care when choosing a location for planting.
