More about each dye:
- Madder and Indian madder roots (lat. Rubia Tinctorum, Rubia Cordifolia) - one of the first natural dyes used by humankind. They date back at least 4 thousand years and its history is simply marvelous. Madder is famous all over the world due to its deep bright red, lightfastness, and wash fastness. Also can be used for bright red, dark purple, brick, rust pink, peach, salmon, and other similar colors. Add a pinch of chalk for deeper reds or just a bit of cream of tartar for fire reds. A bit more acid such as citric acid can shift color to brilliant orange or soft peach. Use additional iron mordant for violets, purples, and lavenders.
- Sappanwood (lat. Caesalpinia sappan) is a wonderful dye, brought to Europe from India on the Silk Road and highly valued by the dyers of the time for its rich colors. This dye is wonderful for beginners - it produces rich colors easily and you can have great fun experimenting with different mordants and additives.
- Dyer`s alkanet (lat. Alkanna tinctoria) is well known for its purple colorant that can be found in the roots of this plant. This dye is very versatile and can be used for textiles and cosmetics and soaps. Alkanet`s colorants are not soluble in water so it has to be dissolved in alcohol. Simply soak in alcohol for several days until the liquid becomes very rich in color. Then add extra water so your fibers can be fully covered in the dye solution.
- Peepal ( lat. Ficus religiosa) bark gives various long-lasting shades of peach, pink, soft red, violet, terracotta, and many similar. The peepal tree is the oldest portrayed tree in India and a native plant in the Himalayan tract, Bengal and Central India. Since ancient times, peepal tree has been known for its mythological, religious and medicinal importance. Its Latin name "Religiosa" refers to 'religion' because the tree is sacred in both Hinduism and Buddhism and it is believed that this is the same tree that sheltered Buddha when he was enlightened.
- Lac ( lat. Kerria Lacca) gives brilliant red, crimson, purple, and burgundy shades. It is well known all around the world and the color it gives is lightfast and wash fast. The dye is made from the scale insect Kerria lacca (sin. Lacciferia lacca) which can be found (and cultivated) in India, Nepal, China, and other countries.
