A Pythagorean cup is a drinking cup attributed to Pythagoras of Samos, who wished to teach his students the importance of temperance in life. A siphoning action allowed the cup to drain its whole contents through the base once it had been filled beyond a particular point.

Because it symbolizes the essential principles of law (ύβρις-insult and vέμεσις-nemesis), it is also known as the Cup of Justice, Greedy Cup, or Fair Cup. When the limit is surpassed (ύβρις-insult), not only what is beyond the limit is lost but also those that we have already been accomplished up to this point (nemesis).
