I'm new to vinyl. What should I know about LP records?

They are an amazing audio storage format. Many of the records we sell (and play for ourselves) are at least 40 years old. Some are as much as 75 years old! Long-playing 33 rpm "LP" albums were introduced in 1948. They have proved surprisingly durable and resilient. We've found LPs covered with dust, mold, goo and scratches, as if they'd been used to play Frisbee. Yet after our expert cleaning (we've done thousands), the records will often play resonantly, with almost no evidence of improper handling! Many scratches affect only the surface/tops of the grooves, not the audio information stored below. (Other times, heavily damaged discs are simply not salvageable.) But for long life, records do require proper handling and care.

How do I care for records?

Handle them carefully by the edges and the label. Don't touch the grooves, since that can leave skin oils, dust and other harmful substances that find their way deep into the grooves. Always dust each record lightly before playing, with a vinyl-intended velvet or carbon fiber brush. Play each side only once, not twice in a row. (Because needle movement disturbs vinyl, let the record rest after playing.) Frequent needle/stylus cleaning also works wonders.

What about storing records?

Immediately after playing, return records to their inner sleeves, which should be replaced upright inside their jackets. Don't leave vinyl out to collect dust and dirt. Store records upright, not flat, and certainly not at an angle (which allows them to warp). Ideal storage conditions are cool and dry, away from heat and water, and away from sunlight (which fades covers).

Oops, my record got damaged or dirty. What should I do?

Many problems can be remedied with a light wash. (Search the internet for suggested techniques.)

How do you clean the records you sell?

We added the Humminguru Nova ultrasonic cleaner to our arsenal in 2025. This is an amazing machine for fixing nagging problems like surface noise. Previously, we used the Spin Clean manual system, with 2 units, one to clean and one to rinse. We'd wet-wipe each record to remove surface dirt; then wet-spin according to manufacturer instructions. (Some of the albums we sell have gone through both cleaning systems.) Everything is air-dried upright for at least 24 hours. All vintage record covers are either aired-out for several days in front of electric fans, or first rehabilitated via the well-known Clorox wet-wipe method.

My pre-owned record has stickers or writing on it. How come?

Those are part of its life story! We only remove previous owners' name labels, ID numbers and other attachments when we feel 100 percent certain we can do so without damaging either the record or the cover. Any uncertainty means we leave it alone. The same is true of record covers, especially 1950s-1970s cardboard, which often tends to split after decades of use/storage. Attempting a fix can often make a problem worse, and we don't want to take chances with these vintage artifacts. (We often remove paper stickers with Un-Du, while leaving alone thornier attachments like plastic and tape.)

My record doesn't look perfect. Why not?

It doesn't have to, for one thing, and may sound great despite visual imperfections. Many "defects" are not worth worrying about, including small vinyl-manufacturing "bubbles," light user scratches or rubs, stubborn surface fingerprints, and scuffed album edges. (Record changers were widely used into the 1970s, to stack records on the spindle to play as many as six LP sides in a row without further attention. Vintage LPs were designed for this practice, with raised edges to protect the audio inside the grooves.)

Why do I hear "noise" while playing my vinyl?

Clicks and pops were common in the LP era, especially when listeners played records without first dusting the current side with a brush to clear ambient dust. Other noise may be due to dirt being "pushed" deeper into grooves thanks to improper care, or it could be due to damaged needles being used. We do the best we can in cleaning, and more often than not, our efforts are quite effective.

Everyone's turntable set-up is different, with any number of variations in tonearm weight, anti-skating function, counterweight setting, cartridge alignment, stylus choice, and more. We can't be certain that any record will play the same on our equipment as on your equipment. But we work hard to provide the cleanest records, with accurate descriptions. (We spot-test every record we sell on our own turntables -- the mid-range Fluance RT81+ and Audio Technica AT-LP120X-USB.)
