Are there different grades of shungite?

Yes, shungite is classified into three types based on its carbon content: Type I: Elite (Noble) Shungite: Shiny, silvery-black, with 90-98% carbon. Rare (less than 1% of deposits), lightweight, and fragile, it’s hand-extracted and left in its natural shape. Ideal for water purification, but costly and not suitable for shaping. Type II: Petrovski Shungite: Semi-dull black, with 70-80% carbon. This type is rare. Type III: Black (Regular) Shungite: Matte or slightly lustrous when polished, with 30-60% carbon. The most abundant type it’s shaped into objects like spheres, pyramids, and plates.

What is the black dust on my shungite, and is it harmful?

The black dust on your shungite is a natural residue from its high carbon content, often from raw edges or crafting. It’s normal and harmless. Wipe it off with a dry cloth or damp paper towel if it transfers to skin or clothes. Avoid soaking polished shungite in water to preserve its polished surface—just a quick wipe is enough!

How should shungite be cleaned and recharged?

You can cleanse your shungite using your favorite method, like smudging, sunlight, or moonlight. For best results, place your shungite in direct sunlight for several hours at least every 30 days to cleanse and recharge its energy.

Why does my shungite have white, grey, or gold streaks and/or veins?

White, grey, or gold streaks and veins in shungite are natural inclusions of quartz or pyrite, common in this stone. You may also see veins and small pits where inclusions have naturally worn away. These features are normal and add to your shungite’s unique character!

Is your shungite authentic, and how can I verify it?

Yes, all our shungite is 100% authentic, sourced directly from Russia with no middleman. We verify its authenticity using an Ohm meter. Shungite is unique as the only stone that conducts electricity—you can test it yourself with an Ohm meter or flashlight. Check the video in each listing for a demonstration!

✨ ABOUT OUR SHUNGITE

Our shungite is guaranteed authentic and sourced from Karelia, Russia. Shungite is an ancient carbon-rich rock formed approximately 2 billion years ago, and its name comes from the Karelian village of Shunga.

One of shungite’s distinctive physical characteristics is its electrical conductivity, and we conductivity-test our shungite as part of our authenticity checks.
