All jeans are listed to the waist measurement, NOT the tag size. Vintage jeans were designed to shrink. The actual measured size will generally be 2-3 inches smaller than the tag size.

The measurements are taken as follows:

Waist- laying flat, taken across the back waistband, then doubled
Hips- laying flat, with the tape measure at the bottom of the zip or button fly, then doubled
Rise- from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband
Inseam- from the crotch seam inside the leg to the hem

Vintage high waisted jeans have a very different fit than modern jeans. Most high waist styles have a rise (the distance from the crotch to the waistband) of 11-12”. Modern jeans typically have a 7-8” rise. Shorts are listed according to the actual measured waist size in inches, NOT the tag size.
