This awesome black and white Singapore merlion photography canvas wall art was photographed at the Marina Bay waterfront.
Marina Bay is one of my favourite parts of Singapore. You can take a nice stroll along the waterfront and there are plenty of interesting things to see and photograph.
I went to Marina Bay one evening because I thought of creating a black and white photograph of Marina Bay Sands. I got there way before sunset to scout around the area looking for an interesting perspective to view the architecture.
The weather was beautiful, slightly overcast but the sun was still shining. There was music playing from the bar and restaurants along the waterfront. People were everywhere, enjoying their food, chilling out with friends or just enjoying the view. It was just good vibes all over!
While I was taking my time walking around the area, I found myself arriving at the Merlion...
The Merlion is a national symbol of Singapore that represents its history and culture. It is also a tourist hot spot where there is often endless waves of tourist wanting to take a picture with the statue. I wanted to avoid Merlion because of that.
Although part of me wanted to leave very badly, another part of me thought I should explore it as I wasn't getting any idea to photograph Marina Bay Sands.
Suddenly, something popped into my mind like a light bulb...What if I could create a black and white photograph of the Merlion without any distraction from the crowd. The mythical creature contrasting the modern world in the background could create a timeless piece that encapsulates the essence of the country in a single image.
I set up my tripod in the middle of the crowd where people were walking endlessly in all directions around me. Some ignored me, some looked at the back of my camera to see what I was taking, some stood really close and I had to ask them politely to watch out for my tripod!
I did long exposure so each shot took around 5 minutes to complete. I took several shots, I must have been standing in the same spot for around half an hour.
When I viewed the photos on my computer, I knew I had gotten the shot I wanted! Now the tricky part...post-processing (editing). I had underestimated the technical challenge to create the photograph that I had envisioned. It took me several hours over a few days to achieve the final version that I was happy with.
