A high-quality art print of a French antique jacquard weave "point paper" featuring a red and blue floral pattern.

Weavers used these binary code ‘maps’ as part of the design process that creates the pattern in woven fabrics.

The featured design, ref VAN 2969 was drawn up in 1907 for the Roubaix, France Jacquard furnishing fabric weaver Vanoutryve.
Sadly, the talented designer is unknown, however, we do know that at the time this large influential Mill used design studios in Paris and Tourcoing along side their locally based textile design studios in the textile city of Roubaix.
The printer of the specialist point paper grid paper, Bellavone was based in Paris.

A brief background to Textile Point Papers.

Prior to the advent of computer aided design (CAD), drawings of woven textile pattern were translated by craftsmen onto special graph paper called point papers. These detailed drawings were then coloured with the different weave plotting’s and then read by textile technicians, who cut the weaving instruction cards that were to be placed onto Jacquard looms that ‘read’ the binary code pattern.

Using its mathematical settings and various coloured weave plotting’s, weavers are able to produce many different qualities of fabric each woven with a version of the design drawn on the point paper.
