ANGER

This 6 week School Counseling Small Group Unit was created for students who struggle with understanding and managing anger.
Objectives: Students will be able to identify feelings and that everyone experiences feelings of anger. Students will also understand that feelings come and go. Students will understand the difference between anger and fear and some common body responses for each. Students will be able to choose an appropriate coping strategy to deal with their anger and know when to ask for help.


CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Students will be able to identify the emotions they are feeling and use calming strategies to calm down if necessary. They will be able to decide the size of the problem and determine whether they need help solving it. Students will be able to express feelings and filter thoughts as necessary. They will be able to listen to others actively and work together to find solutions. Finally, they will be able to let go and move on from conflicts.


WORRY

Students will be able to identify their feelings and that everyone experiences feelings of worry. Students will understand the definition of worry and anxiety. They will identify some common body responses when feeling worried. Students will be able to choose an appropriate coping strategy to deal with their worry and know when and how to ask for help.


STUDY SKILLS

This 6 week Small Group Counseling unit includes important executive functioning skills such as organization, study habits and test-taking tips. Students will understand why study skills are important in life. Students will understand common study struggles and be able to set simple goals. Students will be able to create workspaces that are conducive to studying and understand several study skills that will help them on any assignment or test.


GOAL SETTING

In this 6 week small group unit, students will understand what goals are and why they are important. Students will be able to identify different types of goals as well as the difference between long- and short-term goals. They will be able to set SMART goals for themselves and map out a plan for achieving them time and time again. Students will also be able to break down a goal into more manageable steps.

RESPECT

In this 6 week small group unit, students will understand the definition of respect and whether they show and receive respect in various situations. They will also identify why respect is important to give and receive. Students will be able to consider how they decide to give respect to others. Students will understand that there are different types of respect we can show. They will be able to categorize scenarios for each type.

FAMILY CHANGES / DIVORCE

Students will identify the members of their families and what makes a family a family. Students will understand that every family is unique..They will understand that these families are still families and can go through changes over time. Students will be able to identify specific changes their family is going through in the past or present. Students will be able to identify the difference between separation and divorce.

GRIEF AND LOSS

Students will be able to define grief and several feelings you might feel when grieving a loss. Students will be able to identify the 5 stages of grief. Students will reflect on their own feelings and understand that grief can come in waves. Students will identify ways to cope with grief and loss. Students will be able to decide on coping strategies that they would like to try when feeling upset about a loss. Students will remember their loved ones through memory keepsake activities.

FRIENDSHIP

This small group counseling curriculum takes a six-week deep dive into healthy friendship skills. Upper elementary and middle school students will use these friendship activities to reflect on the traits of a good friend. This kit contains everything you need to plan and implement a successful group. You can also use these ASCA-aligned activities for lunch bunch groups.

SELF CONTROL / IMPULSIVE BEHAVIOR

Students will be able to define self-control and identify a few areas for improvement regarding their own self-control struggles. They will identify impulsive behaviors and practice their control over them in different settings. Students will reflect on various situations where self-control may be required and then practice controlled breathing to calm down before reacting. They will identify and practice long-term strategies for identifying the intensity of their feelings and maintaining self-control.

SELF-ESTEEM

Students will understand the definition of self-esteem and reflect on their own confidence and how they value themselves. Students will understand and define the parts of high self-esteem. They will be able to reflect on their own areas of strength and areas for improvement regarding their self-confidence. Students will reflect on the value of other people’s opinions and the role that should play in their self esteem and self-worth.

SOCIAL SKILLS

This small group counseling unit includes six weeks of engaging activities. Students will be able to discover new social skills and work on their ability to get along with others. They will practice conversation skills, positive body language, and personal space.
