Within the hilltop Tuscan town of Pienza, you can find many intriguing passageways just off the main squares. I loved this scene for it’s stillness, the flag and the evidence of years of life.

From Wikipedia “1405 Corsignano was the birthplace of Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini (Italian: Enea Silvio Piccolomini), a Renaissance humanist born into an exiled Sienese family, who later became Pope Pius II. Once he became Pope, Piccolomini had the entire village rebuilt as an ideal Renaissance town and renamed it after himself to Pienza.

I painted this after visiting Italy with my wife in 2011. I loved this small hilltop village and all it's alleyways, especially since I was experiencing firsthand what I'd only seen in pictures. Everything is so terra-cotta looking as if the walls rise out of the fired clay earth.

This original oil painting measures 24" x 36" and is framed as shown. The depth of the frame is 2 1/4" and is a custom-made float frame with the reveal around the edge of the painting. The frame has a wire and is ready-to-hang. The painting has shown in Halifax galleries and at the Italian Centre in 2017.
