Growing basics:
Sunlight: Full sun is essential for the best fruit production. Glencoe will tolerate some light shade but berries will be fewer and less sweet. Choose the sunniest spot available.
Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic soil with a pH of around 5.5 to 6.5. Loamy or sandy soil is ideal. Work in organic matter before planting to improve both drainage and fertility.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulching with an acidic material such as composted bark helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and maintain the slightly acidic conditions Glencoe prefers.
Support: Glencoe has an upright, bushy growth habit and is relatively self-supporting compared to trailing raspberry varieties. In rows, a simple parallel wire system provides useful support as the canes fill out. Raised beds also work very well.
Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring as new growth begins. A top dressing of composted organic matter in autumn also helps build soil health ahead of the following season.
Pruning: Raspberries fruit on second-year canes. After harvest, cut the canes that have fruited down to the ground to make room for the new canes that will carry next year's crop. Remove any weak or crowded canes at the same time.
Hardiness: Glencoe performs best in USDA zones 4 to 8. It is well suited to cool climates and produces its most abundant and flavourful crops in areas with warm summers and cool nights. Protect from extreme heat and strong wind for best results.
