Ludwig van Beethoven | Ludwig van Beethoven, (17 December 1770 - 26 March 1827) was a German classical composer and pianist. Even today he is considered one of the most important composers of all time. Some of his best-known compositions contain 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos,1 violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, a Liturgy (Missa Solemnis), as well as an opera, Fidelio. His career as a composer is divided into three periods, the early, the middle, and the last. The first ends around 1802, the middle lasts from 1802 to 1812, while the last begins in 1812 and ends in 1827 when he died. Beethoven was born in Bonn, then the capital of the Electorate of Cologne, which was part of the Holy Roman Empire (modern-day Germany). From an early age, he showed his talent in music, with his father, Johan van Beethoven being his first teacher, along with Christian Gottlob Neefe. At the age of 21, he moved to Vienna, where he began an apprenticeship with Joseph Haydn. gaining at the same time the reputation and the repertoire of the virtuoso pianist. He lived in Vienna until his death. At the end of the third decade of his life, his hearing began to weaken until later he became completely deaf. So, in 1811, he stopped conducting and performing in front of an audience, and started composing exclusively.
