Antique 1800s Reliquary. Spanish 19th Century Ex Voto. Jesus Christ with Reed. Ecce Homo. Silver Wirework. Klosterarbeiten Monastery Convent

A wonderful and rare 19th century Spanish reliquary featuring an image of Jesus Christ with the crown of thorns and a reed sceptre (bulrush) in hand, set within a decorative silver coloured wirework frame. It was undoubtedly created in a monastery or convent and is a lovely example of Klosterarbeiten.

The coloured antique lithograph on paper is set behind glass and has some faded gold detail. It depicts the moment in John, Chapter 19:5 where Christ is brought before Pontius Pilate who calls out 'Ecce Homo' - 'Behold, the man!' as he presents Jesus to the crowd before his crucifixion.

The reliquary has a pale grey textile front and a striped back, together with a corded loop (still useable) for hanging, and decorated with a faded purple bow, probably a reference to the purple robes Jesus was said to have worn. As you can see, it is rather beautifully timeworn, reflecting 150 - 200 years of use as an object of devotion. Please note on some of the images there appears to be a pale white horizontal line two thirds down - this is actually a reflection on the glass, not a defect. It is approx 6.5 cms in diameter and weighs 16 grams. Will be shipped by Royal Mail First Class Signed For or International Tracked and Signed For.
