This beautiful and interesting print of “Aeronautics – Plate I" is from the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Ninth Edition (American Reprint) published in 1884 by the J. M. Stoddart Co., of Philadelphia. The Ninth Edition was published between the years 1875 to 1889 and included 24 volumes plus one index volume. The Encyclopaedia Britannica is a general knowledge English-language encyclopaedia and “is regarded as one of the most scholarly”. Encyclopaedia Britannica began publication between 1768 and 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland as three volumes. Its rising stature helped recruit eminent contributors, and the 9th edition (1875-1889) and the 11th edition (1911) are landmark encyclopaedias for scholarship and literary style. Although publication has been based in the United States since 1901, the Britannica has maintained British spellings. Many of the prints from the 9th edition use names and spellings to describe the scientific identities of plants, animals and machines that are now obsolete thus giving us a truly unique and timeless look back in our history.
There is uniform tanning of this page with darker highlights at the page edge. There may be some foxing on the front or back. The paper quality is of a heavier cardstock than the vellum descriptive pages were printed on and is in line with a publication from that time period that was intended for mass distribution. The illustration was folded along a center line and inserted into the publication therefore leaving a crease at the middle that is also darker with discoloration. The actual images are also typical of the printing process available at that time and what you would expect of a print that is well over 125 years old. The rough edge from the binding has been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge is trimmed). Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during display or shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book measured approximately 6-3/4” x 10-1/2” but the folded book plate is being sold custom matted to fit into a standard 11x14 frame.
