These intricately woven bags are made in the Eastern Mountain villages of Bali, a jungle grass called Atta.

They are smoked over a coconut husk and honey fire to give them their lovely golden color and slightly smoky scent. Made by extremely skilled artisans, these bags will last for years.
Please be aware that the bags will have a smokey aroma sometimes for several weeks especially when they are newly made from the smoking process this part of the handmade process which makes the bags so unique, but this smell will go away.

The smokey smell isn't unusual they are smoked for 3 days in a smoking oven it's a very important part of the curing process to color and to harden them when they are a fresh newly made bag this can happen but don't worry it will go away.

First of all, please do not spray anything on your bag this is very important.

1. Leaving your bag outside in the sun each day for about 5 days will help to make the smell dissipate.
2. Leaving it outside at night in a safe place also.
3. Follow these steps for about 5 to 10 days or for how long it's needed...

Do not put inside a cupboard initially it needs to air and breathe.

This bag is made very well and nice for sure, the packaging was strong enough to withstand just about anything I think. The only thing was it smells like it was barbecued, had to sit it outside overnight. The smell a few days later has faded subsided.

The smell described is from the making process and it is in the descriptions for the tote where the smoking process is clearly outlined. Much care is taken to air the bags out for several months before selling. When the bag is wrapped in plastic and sent halfway around the world of course it needs to be aired out for a day or so. It isn't made in a factory it is handmade from atta grass and has to be woven, sundried, dipped for coloring then smoked in a smoker oven. It's a 5 Star bag every day.
