DESCRIPTION: This 1950s' cotton dress with matching bolero is stunning! It features a corset-laced bodice with inset and can be laced in a number of ways. When the matching belt is worn, the laces can be tied in back, or wear without the belt and lace in front. The violet trim color perfectly sets off the grey and white abstract print (see close-up photo for a good view of the print.). There are neck ties so you can tie it at the right place on your chest; seamed, fitted waist; lightly pleated, full skirt; and side metal zipper. The lightweight fabric has some stretch on the bias and is similar in feel to the stretch cottons being shown today. Shown with a semi-full crinoline (the crinni is pink, which accounts for the color you may see under the skirt!); there's room for a fuller one if desired.
This would make a great wedding dress for a garden or other informal setting.
The label is "Gwen Lee." This firm was apparently in business from the '40s through at least the '60s and was based in North Carolina. Pieces from it do not seem to be readily available; this is the first I've had in more than 30 years of collecting.
SIZE: Estimated "best fit" for a size 2, possibly down to a 0 or up to a 4. Shown on a size XS manni, and I did have to clip the back a little to fit. There's flexibility in the bodice due to the lacings, both the neck ties and the bodice laces. But check the waist measurement, as that is the most critical dimension on this dress. Garment dimensions below; we recommend you compare them to a similarly styled dress you own that fits you well.
* Bust - 32 to 35" (laced tightly and loosely; measurements approximate)
* Waist - 25 1/2"
* Hip - Free/full
Bodice Length - 8" from under arm down seam line
Body Length - 34 1/2" from under arm down seam line
* Measured flat on outside and doubled unless otherwise stated.
CONDITION: Excellent. All pieces, including the belt, have just been professionally dry cleaned. I see one or two light spots that didn't come out, but they're virtually unnoticeable. (My dry cleaner and I have learned that less is more when it comes to cleaning vintage items.)
SHIPPING: International customers, please remember that we don't know and aren't responsible for your country's duty fees, and can't mark your order as a gift.
